I agree with all of your points; I just hope it all happens within 5 years. It took advertisers 10 years to come up with the idea for billboards after the Eisenhower Interstate System was created.

This post is written well, and give some good insight into what you're been doing with WSM? over the course of the film's life to this point. As someone who was lucky enough to see it months ago, I think you've got a potential gold mine at your fingertips, and your marketing strategy with your eBooks as a tie-in to the film is brilliant and exciting, and I can't wait to see where this takes you.

All valid points -

One thing you're missing - I'm not talking about watching on a computer - there's a massive collision of computer and TV coming as far as hardware is concerned. Check out the newest iMacs for a peek - they come out with one of those that's 50-60 inches, and there's no reason to buy a TV. Even subtract the computer part - the prices on HDTVs continually drop - a 70-inch screen in your home soon won't be cost-prohibitive.

I'm not saying that there won't be independent films that run in theaters - just that by and large it's coming to a point where it's not a viable economical choice for the producer to pursue that course on an independent production.

The flipside to that RIGHT NOW is self-distribution isn't set up yet to be a viable economical choice, either. Hense all the articles about how indie film is in trouble.

And again, I'm talking the true indies, not stuff like Kick-Ass, that has Nic Cage, is based on successful comic book series, and cost $70M.

I love the theater experience too, but largely for the big spectacle movies and comedies (if it's crowded).

The economic info agrees with me - and yes, a HUGE part of that is they just don't market the smaller movies - there could be multiple Slumdog Millionaire results every year if they'd put the muscle behind it, but the simple fact is they just don't do that 99% of the time.

A few things, all while bearing in mind that I am an independent/foreign film watcher. I haven't paid to see anything resembling a blockbuster in years.

1) There are a lot of people who will never, ever prefer watching movies on their computer to watching them in the theater. Honestly, I hate watching anything on my computer. If these people are like me, they will actively support these films when they are in theaters in order to help ensure that other movies like them get their chance in the theater too. This mentality (and don't underestimate it) will keep independent movies in theaters for a long time to come.

2) There's a corollary here to the DVD. I will never stop wanting to own the incredible DVDs that Criterion puts out, not only because I love the extras, but because it's a tangible representation that will always exist. The whole digital download thing makes sense for music because it needs to be portable, but would I store my movies on a hard drive? What if someone wants to borrow them? DVDs retain a lot of value no matter how advanced the digital download thing goes. I do, however, fully support and love the instant download aspect of Netflix.

It's like if Colbert mentions something on his show, sales go up automatically. Thursday he had a segment called 'Cheating Death' wherein he referenced the mamba snake.
