No time for anything lengthy today, so here are some contrasts in style in the @Brandi88 Coloring Contest. As a judge, I think it’s only fair for me to give an idea as to how I might judge each of these.

From @gelfing1220 – via computer. It’s excellent, vibrant, and alive. A slight wink/nod to Christmas. Highly skilled work – one of the first that was submitted, and really kinda blew me away. 24/25.

BRANDI ENGEL

Next, from the infamous @mfeige. This is raw, savage work, done with an animalistic verve and passionalistic enthusiasministicism. Perhaps it was done in the mountains, among wild animals. Perhaps at a podium.

Primitive tools. There’s a life in this piece I need to cling to. 25/25, or…if you write “I Heart Gobots” on Brandi’s stomach it’s totally a bonus point for me. Other judges may feel differently.

BRANDI ENGEL 1

I think there are 14 entries turned in so far, with over a week to go yet. I said in my head I’d consider it a success at 30, so I’m pretty happy.

Which of these do you like better, and why.

(If you have no idea what’s going on, read this post for the lowdown on the Coloring Contest. Ends 7/31, which is next Friday.)

they both have purple so i like neither.

actually, i would combine the two. put @mfeige's blue hat onto @gelfing1220's outfit. use @gelfing1220's fireworksey explosion with @mfeige's onomonopias.

i also <3 (this means 'Parkinson's love') anything that says anything that ends in 'bot'.

I don't know if this is possible, but I'd like a nice grayscale submission. Something to make it a very serious explosion.

Well print them out and pass em around the office – let's see some high-lit coloring.

ooo good idea! i have hi-liters galore!

also, i forgot. @mfeige wins everything for at least a couple days cuz he read (tweeted) me an awesome bedtime story last night. for realz.

People who use computers to color are cheaters.

Show us your skills with markers.

  • ?

what up with the question mark, spaeth

  • Wish

I can't afford markers in this economy.

Seriously though, and I'm not a computer whiz, but don't you just have to click a button to get a computer to fill in a space with color? Or you like highlight the space and then click? Seems like those who put in the hard work, or elbow grease as my grade school teacher called it, would get preferential treatment when it came to the scoring.

Might be time for crayon colorers to start unionizing.

@Brian, thanks for your kind comments! It was a lot of fun!

@Wish, I definitely give extra kudos to people who use markers, crayons, etc. (especially since they don't have the option of an “undo” like on the computer!) However, I'd like to point out that coloring on a computer isn't necessarily as easy as you make it sound… I colored and shaded my entry by hand with a tablet pen, so the tactile experience was very much like using a brush/marker. In all, it took about four hours and over 20 layers. Sorry if you think this is cheating!
