Shaq CavsUPDATE: I’m in surgery Friday morning, so there will likely be no post. While I’m gone, please give me your best @jerryricetwo impression about anything.

(My Shaq-to-Cavs thoughts are the first comment.)

My favorite person on Twitter, @jerryricetwo, went and saw Transformers 2 what seems to be at least 14 times yesterday, and I’ve reprinted some of his his Tweets/thoughts here.

I like everything he says here, although I have no idea if I agree with any of it with regard to the movie. There were lots of attractive girls at Shia’s college – that’s like so true.

Did you see Transformers 2? What do you think about Shaq-to-Cavs? Would you go on an “ice cream date” with me if asked?

    There's no way they can re-sign realistically re-sign Hedo BUT, if they did? the team is rather deep in the starting 5 and likely has the best starting 5 in the NBA.

    1) I dunno, Wallace was their big trading chip. Even if Shaq isn't great, I highly doubt they trade him mid-season (unless this is a complete train wreck)

    2) Yes, Z to the bench.

    3) It's gonna be fun looking for random Shaq sightings around town.

    4) could Shaq guard Hedo or Lewis? Sure, he would slow Howard down, which would in turn slow those guys down... but the Delonte West is still short and Varejao is still slow.

    I'm not a big fan of this deal. If reeks of desperation to me. Am I excited? Hell yes, it's freaking Shaq. Windhorst says they aren't done, which is good. See if they can pry Charlie Vileandafsdnafsdfa away from the Bucks and go sign 'Sheed.

    They still need a big guard who can take on a Pierce, Turkoglu or Kobe for stretches.

    people really overreacted to the orlando loss. look, they built a team to beat boston, and didn't get to play them. add Shaq, a big who can shoot (Sheed?), and use more athletes to back up the wings. they will be fine.

    No, but they have long guys like Odom and Ariza (and Kobe). Obviously, the Cavs aren't done and they're gonna need to do more (again, Sheed etc). But it's not like 2008-09 Cavs + Shaq = Championship

  • the problem with that idea is that their richard jefferson trade was to free up money to re-sign him. despite all the goodwill and revenue that would bring in from the hairless cleveland populace.

  • I don't think you need a dominant team to win a title these days - just a really good team that peaks right.

    Everyone constantly retooling and shorter contracts in the next CBA will continue this.

    Miami. Detroit. Boston. The 05 Spurs. Look at how ORL got to the Finals - two weeks of otherworldly shooting. The 07 Cavs Finals team - profoundly average at best.

    Maybe I'm having nostalgia or getting old, but do you think these 09 Lakers are gonna go down in history as a great team?
  • not really. a historically-great team has to be wire-to-wire the best in the league. they were really only the best in patches through the regular season, and they struggled in their early. think about some of the greats in that regard...

    If another superstar farts in Cleveland's general direction, Cleveland fans fall all over themselves to smell it. This is just another failure acquisition in the long line of other Cleveland sports failures.

    Seeing Shaq in Whine and Gold is like seeing Mark Price in a Bullets uniform or Danny Manning in a Pistons uniform... he's going out with a whimper, and thank god he'll do it on a team I despise.

    I think it's a good trade for the most part but like you said, it should have been made in February. I do have concerns: 1) Shaq will slow down the offense which is the opposite of what the Cavs should want to do, 2) as GOT said, Shaq stinks at defending the pick and roll. There are very few teams in the East that don't rely heavily on this offensive tactic, 3) IF they don't win or make it to the Finals and Shaq AND LeBron leave that could just demolish the entire city of Cleveland, 4) They better have good trainers in Cleveland or they might want to hire the crew from Phoenix that kept Shaq on the floor.

    I just finished reading Phil Jackson's "The Last Season". In it he says Shaqs weakness is defending the P n R. Hedo and Dwight killed CLE on the P n R. Shaq will not help them in this regard. Hollinger echos that statement on WWL dot com. I like the trade from a rent a player and see if he has anything left in the tank and might want to parlay that into another contract. Plus we'll see an even HAPPIER bench mob in CLE than the were last year. Maybe they'll do the kissing on the mouth rather than all the hugs, chest bumps, and laughings. I give the trade a b plus as they gave up trash for a guy who wants a 'ship and another contract.
  • Shaq-to-Cavs:

    1) No-brainer. Ben's expiring contract for Shaq's, and Shaq can contribute. If it doesn't work, you can still trade him.

    2) Hopefully he's motivated. I'm assuming Z goes to the bench?

    3) Great storyline, and Cleveland pretty much just became the center of the NBA. LeBron on the Knicks couldn't even get more attention than this, so that really can't hurt. If you were sick of "We want LeBron v Kobe in Finals" campaigns from the NBA and sponsors this past season, good luck with your sanity next year.

    4) Wish they would've done it in February. Will always wonder if we'd be sitting on a title right now if they had.

  • Great point re: Cleveland being the center of the NBA. Charlie V already tweeted about the Cavs just needing a PF. Whether that's Andy or someone like CV, whatever - but now you have to think guys are looking at Cleveland and thinking "damn, that looks like a lot of fun".

    And I like fun.

    Shaq will be lucky to play 55 games next season.

    Second,

    For all the talk surrounding the "Big Depression" now, he's nothing more than an expiring deal.

    Third,

    I'm more worried about what Cleveland will do without Shaq now than I was. Considering he and Z come off the books next season, what $32 million off the books? But you still need to sign LeBron so, still not under the cap so no worries.

    @brianspaeth - You can play all the Guitar Hero on the sidelines you want... LA has the rings and honestly that's all that matters.
