BANNER FEB2010

Everything is Exactly the Same

Who Shot MambaSo like here’s the new domain. The non-complicated but maybe worth reading summary:

1) Everything is exactly the same except that the banner is now clickable, and the link color is blue-er-er. The social networking buttons are new at the bottom of the posts, as well. Oh – copyright footer is new and graphical.

2) Also new – the little rotating media box in the sidebar. It’s assorted WSM? social networking links and a Prelude to a Super Airplane link.

3) The feed is running through Feedburner now – it’s linked up in the RSS thingie.

4a) There’s now a mobile version of BTAA, and it like has its own special banner (with an explanation point) and everything.

If you’re on any cell phone other than an iPhone, just go to brian23.com and it automatically redirects you to the mobile site. Or, you can go to the link at the start of this sentence, and then text yourself the link.

(I did this through a site called MoFuse, and it was free and easy. They were recommended by Chris Brogan, and if you’re a burgeoning social networking junkie, you should probably be checking out his site on regular basis.)

4b) iPhone users are set to just go to the regular site, because Disqus doesn’t seem to work in this mobile network version. This will surely get toyed with and changed in 6 months when the world is totally different than it is today, as seems to happen regularly.

5) All the comments transferred on their own. I don’t know how this happened, but Disqus has come around and redeemed itself lately, yeah?

Monday I’ll start going through your list of requested topics – thanks for being my BFFs. Thoughts on any of this, or a list of three things you wish you weren’t too embarrassed to name your dog are welcome.

If I weren’t afraid of dogs, mine would be Tree, Desk, and Horse.

my current dog's name is Bowden, after Bobby Bowden, cuz my ex-boyfriend named him and this only embarrasses me a little bit considering i live in Florida and am not a huge FSU fan myself. smh. i also call him things like Bowser, Ladyboy, and Swiggums. don't ask.

my future dogs will be named Novi after Dirk (which should technically be Nowi, but none of the vet technicians would ever be able to pronounce it correctly that way), Walken after Christopher (which would also make him Walken the Dog aka Walkin' the Dog. hahaha. get it???), and maybe something after some cyclist, but i haven't decided on that one yet. unfortunately, i am not embarrassed by any of these. i don't know what would be embarrassing names… except for maybe like Assface or Yani… but it's only embarrassing when you have to tell someone else their name and/or explain it.

i know a guy who has two american bulldogs named Chupa and Culo, which mean Suck and Ass in spanish. that's funny.

yay for my super exciting saturday night that allows me to write too-long comments! wheeee.

My dog's name is Sasha, because I like real names and not things like Kismet or Cowboy or (and I swear these are all names I've heard at the park) Skywalker. She is alternately called Gorda (a Spanish term of endearment meaning “fatty”) or Nena (Spanish for “kid”). It's a long story, but it has do with my Argentine ex-.

I was actually just thinking about this morning while I was running (I don't run with music – I worry about cars jumping the sidewalk or something like that. I'm paranoid.), and I decided I'd really like to name a dog Kingsley*. It would be pretty douchey, I'm sure, so I'd probably decide against it. Other fantastic names I'd eventually decide were way to hip for their own good would be Fox (for explanation see Michel Houellebecq's novel The Possibility of an Island, or thissong that's a tribute to Fox by Iggy Pop) and Iggy, because of the great Iggy Pop and the Stooges song “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” People would either mishear it as Ziggy (which would suck) or immediately get the reference and not think it's funny.

*Kingsley, by the by, is not my real name. I wish it were, but I also feel like I wouldn't live up to Kingsley Amis's standards.

I just named our new Yorkie “Princess Chewbacca Puppyface” so as to cause shame upon the rest of the members of my family every time they have to tell someone the dog's name. And if they try to say the dog's name is Chewy I say “Nuh uh uhh, tell them her FULL NAME.” This has not yet grown old, and I don't imagine it ever will.

She only comes around on rare occasions, and when she does it's a better place. That's gold, miss.

A friend's mother named their dumb little dog (some sort of cock-a-poodle or something) Stormy because her name (the mother's) is Gail, and for her entire life she'd wanted to be known by the (ahem…horrible) nickname Stormy (get it? Gail=Gale=Stormy?). Of course she doesn't tell anyone this, but my friend offered up the info right away.

Brian, if I pose for an intriguing B&W head shot and plaster a red WSM? along the side, can my face go in the sidebar rotation? It's actually my life-long goal.

  • http://madpropstobakedpotatoes.com Brian

Is gale another word for storm? I'm serious – I have no idea.

PS Per the WGA rulebook, I'm technically a professional writer.

  • http://madpropstobakedpotatoes.com Brian

Yeah that would be great – maybe I should leave one slot for that.

  • http://preludetoapretentiousreview.blogspot.com/ Kingsley Le Corbusier

The most common usage is “gale force winds”.

    Congrats!

Oh I have been for years – was just pointing the irony.

I think if you were a weatherman it'd be more ironic. Or if you lived in a place where there was a hurricane season.
