Brian Spaeth Who Shot MambaI was thinking about having a good cry the other day, and then because my actoring is a bit rusty, decided to wait, and not do that thing.

Instead, I made this list of actual pieces of commercial media and entertainment that have made me produce tears, be they sadness tears or happiness tears.

BOOKS:
Catcher in the Rye (Like when he catches the rye finally. I think it’s a metaphor -)
Of Mice and Men (When Lenny does his dying.)

MOVIES:
Armageddon (When BW’s friend who has the kid runs up to the kid when they get back to Earf.)
The Grapes of Wrath (The end.)
Wall-E – A couple times.
The Incredibles – When Dash finally lets loose in the jungle.
Team America – I literally was crying with laughing the first time “AMERICA – F–K YEAH!” played.
The Iron Giant – Twice.
Big Fish – the end.
Field of Dream – duh.

TV SHOWS:
Lost (End of last season – I was just overwhelmed in general at the end.)

MUSIC:
N/A

SPORTS:
Cavs (Too many to list – last time was when they finally got to the Finals – Game 6 vs Pistons in 07.)
Browns (First game back in Cleveland in 1999.)
Indians (When they got to the 95 World Series.)

BLOGS:
Both Teams Played Hard (Just now.)

I’m sure there are more – but this is all I can think of right now. I’m sure some music must have made me cry, but I dunno. What commercial fare has made you shed tears the most, and why do you think it did that.

(Go join the WSM? Facebook Page – it’ll be the only place to see the first teaser…on Sept 1.)

i cried the first time i saw Kill Bill during the big sword fight scene when it went all blue/black because it was so pretty.

i also might have cried in the Dark Knight when the car breaks and he comes out and is on the motorcycle thing because that is SO COOL.

i cried straight through the last hour of A.I. because it was so painfully boring.

i cried a lot in I Am Legend when he had to kill his doggy.

I was like 5 when we got our first Atari and bawled uncontrollably after learning I wasn't able to play as the ghosts.

I cried during Wall-E 'nuff said.

  • MCBias

Ok, this is an obscure book no one's heard of, but at the end, the hero goes back home after a 20-year absence. He tries to tell them how he's changed, but they refuse to forgive him and nail him to a cross to die (book is set in first century). But then, while he's there alone at night, almost gone, his old friends risk death to say good-bye, and in the end he dies surrounded by friends/family. Gets me every time.

I also cry when no ladies will RT me on Twitter :-( and when Yaysports never has a new photoshop no matter how many times I hit refresh. Ok, two of those reasons are not true.

  • http://alexisreviews.tumblr.com alexiskn

OH i forgot! also in Zatoichi at the end when they do the dancing. and also Singin' in the Rain because of the dancing.

(Side Note: The biggest problem with Twitter being down is that I have a strong urge to tweet about it.)

(Side Note2: Twitter being down makes me cry)

big fish is in my top 5 of all time – especially when i want to cry, then it's in my top 1 :)

OH, and the scene where she gets in the bathtub with him and says “i'll never dry out” – i'm tearing up just thinking about it!

  • http://www.amylaurel.com AmyLaurel

Truly Madly Deeply. It's why I am in love with Professor Snape (Disclaimer: not the real one, the actor one named Alan Rickman) (Disclaimers Disclaimer: There technically isn't a “real” Prof Snape… which is also something to cry about… but I meant the one in the HP books).

  • http://www.ndeddiemac.blogspot.com NDEddieMac

When I was young the first time I saw Top Gun I cried a lil when Goose died. Also, Field of Dreams and Rudy, but I think I was genetically hard wired to where I had to for those.

  • http://alexisreviews.tumblr.com alexiskn

omg you guys are making me want to watch Big Fish when i go home tonight. i haven't watched it in too long!

  • http://alexisreviews.tumblr.com alexiskn

  • http://www.amylaurel.com AmyLaurel

No. Now I must. I even watched Perfume (cause he was in it). I am still crying that I can't get those two hours of my life back. Really I would like a lot of hours of my life back…

  • alairson22

when Rudy gets his sack at the end…is that too serious of an answer?

  • http://twitter.com/Dennymayo Dennis Mayo

Deep Blue Sea reminds me of LL Cool Bean and their awesome clothes.

  • http://twitter.com/Dennymayo Dennis Mayo

Rudy gets me emotional but not crying. This story about real life Rudy had me on the brink until the end with the picture of the guy and his mommy then I cried for real.

GO SEE UP!!! Can't think of any other cartoon that caused so much crying. Humanly touching. One of the best of 2009.

These are ADDITIONAL movies to classics mentioned:

Finding Neverland – the whole movie is heart-wrenching
The Sound of Music – Capt. Von Trapp sings Edelweiss…EVERY time and I've seen it 30+ times
Dead Poet's Society – Captain, oh my Captain!…and dead guy
Saving Private Ryan – Entirely jarring movie, lots of dying and emotions
Schindler's List – especially the end
Amadeus – When he dies. The music is powerful and it's the way he was buried. THUNK! 30+x too
Mel Gibson movies like Braveheart (lady love), The Last of the Mohicans (the leap), The Patriot (most of it)
The Princess Bride – 1st time I watched with a H.S. friend it was continuous laughing tears.

Other old stuff that a guy probably wouldn't admit to:
The Thornbirds, Brian's Song, The Breakfast Club, Stand By Me, The Crow, Dr. Zhivago, The English Patient, The Joy Luck Club, Little Women, The Age of Innocence…and a bunch of others with cryable scenes. I think Pan's Labrynth too (?).

    Books:
I only remember a few others from when I was younger
Beauty – Beauty and the Beast nearly as a documentary. The Beast has issues.
    Flowers for Algernon

    TV AD:
The Kleenex “Let It Out” campaign….EVIL! People gush about their lives and problems..UGH! Forced product usage.

  • http://madpropstobakedpotatoes.com Brian

Not to focus in on jut one of those – thanks for the long list, it's cool btw – but what made you cry in The Crow –

One of my favorites, but I can't remember weeping parts. I like when he slaps those knives out of the air.

  • MCBias

ha! I'm crying because I can't remember! I'm so senile.

  • http://twitter.com/SarahHorvat Sarah Horvat

In the beginning when they're getting marriend and they kill her..and maybe a flashback or when he was dying too. It's been a while. Gladiator had moments like that too with his family and the end.

  • nrojb

If i could marry any movie character, it'd be the young sandra templeton.

    “she likes music!”

  • http://www.twitter.com/mfeige mfeige

I don't hate you for hating Big Fish. I just found out my sister hated 500 Days of Summer. :/ I saw it 5 times. Also I was much closer to hating you for crying during PS I Love You even though I cried during it but that was because I watched it right after the Game 6 of the NBA Finals last year when the Lakers lost really badly.

    Movies:
    Brian's Song
The end of every Harry Potter movie.
    E.T.

    Books:
Prelude to a Super Airplane (Jeez, it's like some people have never been here before.)

  • http://madpropstobakedpotatoes.com Brian

Every Harry the Potter movie – is this a sarcasm.

I like that book, also. I cried at the part where Brian was lifting weights.

  • TVBrain

It is not a sarcasm. I feel I am being manipulated by the emotion of the score, but it gets me every time.
Whatever, I thought this was a safe place.

    Good lord…

    1 Book: 2666 (when I finished – that good)

1 Movie: Life Aquatic (when Ned dies in the helicopter crash)

    1 TV show: um…no.

1 Sporting event: 1992 Summer Olympics – when a runner's father came down to help him finish when he got injured.

The movie Finding Nemo has many popular characters including, Marlin the Clownfish, his son Nemo, Dory the Tang fish, and the characters from the aquarium, Gill, Bloat, Peach, Gurgle, Bubbles, Deb, and Jacques. This is an award winning movie that most kids and adults loved. Some parents certainly had to endure endless repetitions of, ‘can we watch it again’ from their kids. The popularity of Finding Nemo was somewhat surprising because it was intended to be a children’s show, but many adults loved it too. Primarily because it featured family related content, without a lot of crude humor.
