Adams on WSM?
(I guested over at Trey Kirby’s the Blowtorch today, the rightful heir to the YAYsports! crown.
As such, I went a bit old-school with it. One can’t go back, but I liked what came out quite a bit.)
A number of you have seen Who Shot Mamba? already, and I also sent a DVD to director Alejandro Adams, who you may remember I interviewed here.
If you read that interview, you know that Alejandro is a serious and intellectual filmmaker, so I was really interested to hear his opinion of Mamba, considering it is none of those things, save for being quite serious about how stupid intends to be.
This was a portion of his initial note.
WSM? is one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen.
I can’t “critique” this film. It’s so far from anything I would attempt to make. On a sheer imagination level, it’s practically on LSD. Inflatable Ben…? (Are there legal issues there?) Your strength is taking everything too far, which is counter-intuitive.
In another movie, I’d think: “This is going on way too long.” But in WSM? these riffs expand and become free-standing set pieces. The sequence of [spoilers redacted] is a masterful stand-alone sequence. And all the Calvin ads are hilarious.
We went back-and-forth a bit after that – it’s fun to hear feedback. I’m getting excited to know this can go on in a public forum soon.
Alejandro’s website is here – he has, as was foretold, vanished from TwitterEarth.
I really, really respect and admire this guy, because he gets things done. That said, he’s also an Orlando Magic fan, so we’re only civil for maybe another 6-8 weeks.
Will you say something counter-intuitive about rice, so I understand what that means.
